Sureanu Mountains are part of the Meridional Carpathians , from the group located between Olt and Jiu-Strei Rivers. They neighbour Candrel Mountains in the east , Strei River inferior depression hallway in the west, the large valley of Mures River in the north, Hateg and Petrosani depressions and Caprei Mountains (an extensions of the Parang Mountain) to the south. Overall, they almost form an triangle, with the base oriented towards NE-SV and top towards Saua Poiana Muierii, located in the SE.
North limit starts from the Sebes valley , near Capalna village. All the way, it integrates within the landscape (200m).
South limit starts from Ciopeia, where Strei River has cut small defile with clear schists and goes along its right bank until reach Baru village. The limit near the Retezat Mountains covers Crivadiei valley, Banitei pass and valley, Bolii Cave and goes on up to the cross of Rosia River.
East limit covers Salanele valley up to the cross of Frumoasa valley, the latter separates the Candrel Mountains.
